Match : Stonor vs. Hambleden
Date : Saturday 26th July 2003
Venue : Hambleden Cricket Club
Result : Stonor won by 2 wickets

Club chairman Peter Collings rolled back the centuries at Hambleden on Saturday when he took a stunning catch that set his side on the road to its seventh

successive victory. Ignoring driving rain, the laws of physics and medical advice, Collings executed a text-book swallow dive to scoop a catch just inches

from the turf off the bowling of the incredulous Kelso. After smelling salts had been administered by the Stonor 12th man the Chairman was able to receive

the congratulations of his teammates with his usual modesty.

In a short, moving speech that lasted a little over three hours, brought tears to the eyes and emptied the lounge bar of the Stag and Huntsman, Collings said

it was "all down to instinct". "Just as Paul released the ball a 20p piece fell out of my pocket," he said. "Naturally I flung myself full length to catch it before it

fell in the mud - it's the groundsman's budget for next year and I didn't want it to get dirty. As luck should have it that red thingy with the stitching on it - the

ball is it? - well it arrived at the same time and I didn't have time to get out of the way."

The Chairman's catch was just one of five superb takes that helped Stonor restrict Hambleden to 121 from their 40 overs. Steffen Collings, Powell,

Nicholson and Allsop all hung on to excellent efforts to support a tight bowling performance. In reply Fennel M helped give Stonor a solid base for the run

chase, ably supported by Fulford-Dobson who played his most accomplished innings for the club, compiling 22 in tricky conditions. Mayo kept things moving,

but sportingly the batsmen came and went at regular intervals, allowing everyone save the Chairman a chance to share in the run chase. Had he been

needed however there is no doubt he would have been up to the task; all that was required was to persuade him to come out of the loo where he had

barricaded himself in.
