skipper Martin Fennell won the toss on a scorching afternoon and decided to
bat, his Stonor team mates breathed a collective sigh of relief at the chance
to bask in the relative cool of the pavilion veranda during the mid-afternoon
Although Martin himself was soon controversially bowled by a high full toss from BBC Caversham opening bowler Brewer, Stonor youngsters Ben Denton and Sanu Yonjan then began to accumulate runs confidently. The tempo was further increased when older hands John Powell and Jez Mayo came to the wicket . Finally the innings gained real impetus thanks to a typically hard-hitting 94 from Olly Nicholson, including 10 fours, 6 sixes and several lost balls.
The Stonor declaration came after only 33 overs with a total of 222 for 5 reflecting both the benign nature of the wicket and the aggressive intent of the Stonor batsmen. Sinka had been the pick of the BBC Caversham bowlers with 0-24 from 9 overs and was unlucky to finish without a wicket.
BBC Caversham never really threatened to overhaul the Stonor total, even though a second wicket partnership between Trevor Deeks and Mark Randall ensured they still had an
outside chance of victory with 20 overs remaining. Once Randall was bowled by John Powell
for 24, no other batsman was really able to provide support for Deeks and BBC Caversham
concentrated on surviving for the draw.
When Deeks himself was stumped for 63, Stonor sensed victory but the lower-order BBC
Caversham batsmen were able to bat out the remaining overs against the left-arm spin
of the outstanding Dan Fennell and Olly Nicholson to achieve a creditable draw.
