Stonor steal victory in end of season thriller at Harpsden.

Conditions were typically autumnal for the last match in both teamsí fixture lists, and when the coin landed, host captain Andrew Norton had no hesitation in asking Stonor to bat first. His decision was vindicated by Stonor being 17 for 3, more through their own lack of application than anything the wicket was responsible for. The Harpsden bowling was never easy to put away, with none of Hamm, Sampson, or Hodgkiss conceding many runs, and only Nicholson made any significant contribution to the Stonor innings. Will Stevens eventually cut a swathe through a not very resilient Stonor tail, and the hosts eventually dismissed Stonor for a paltry 95 runs, and well before the scheduled tea interval.

Harpsden got off to a much better start then had Stonor, but when the score was 46 for 5, and with Miles Hodgkiss and Stevens at the crease, it was clear that the game had reached a defining moment. Hodgkiss was dropped once but when he gave another chance off Dan Fennellís bowling, Richard Hunt accepted it with glee. While Stevens never looked in trouble,
his successive partners at the other end were finding it difficult to do much with Andy
Pennellís nagging line and length, and Fennellís biting left-arm spin. Two quick wickets from
Pennell were followed by Harpsden getting 5 penalty runs off a discarded helmet, taking
them within 5 runs of the target, and then the loss of their 9th wicket to give Pennell his
6th scalp of the match, all of them catches. Needing 4 runs to win, Stevens, looking for 2,
only managed a single, thanks to a fine return from Marc Lovatt in the deep, leaving
number 11 to face Fennellís spin. When he obligingly nicked his first ball into the waiting
hands of gully, Stonor had claimed an unlikely win by 2 runs.

Harpsden were magnanimous in defeat, as the Stonor players gave their retiring skipper,
Martin Fennell, an emotional send-off.
